Timor Leste or East Timor, the former 27th province while still part of the Republic of Indonesia is now beginning to move forward. Residents in Timor Leste can now enjoy the fourth generation fast internet service (4G LTE) after Telkomcel announces its launch in the country.
Telkomcel is a cellular telecommunication service in Timor Leste owned by Telkom Indonesia through TELIN. No wonder the name is somewhat similar to its subsidiary in Indonesia, Telkomsel.
Telkomcel has fulfilled communications requests from over 450,000 subscribers of the 1.2 million total population in Timor Leste since its inception in 2012. The operator currently has a significant market share for cellular services in East Timor.
To deploy the 4G LTE service, they work with Ericsson as network provider. According to Dedi Suherman, CEO of Telkomcel Timor Leste, the ongoing investment and modernization of the network is one form of corporate dedication in ensuring the sustainability of its future operations in the interest of all stakeholders.
“This reflects our commitment to providing the best service quality for the mobile broadband community in Timor Leste through the provision of infrastructure and advanced technology to ensure an outstanding mobile experience for our customers,” Dedi said in a press release we received.
A live test of the LTE 4G network was successfully implemented at the beginning of this month and 4G services were launched this week as part of Telkomcel’s 5 years anniversary operation in Timor Leste.
For Telkomcel, this is an important milestone. Telkomcel became the first operator to deploy 4G LTE with virtual Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) and Ericsson Radio System, LTE RAN 17A software.
The launch of Ericsson LTE RAN 17A brings many improvements that will increase network speed, capacity, and overall network performance thereby enhancing the mobile broadband experience for customers.
Meanwhile, Jerry Soper, President of Ericsson Indonesia and Timor Leste said the cooperation represents a significant achievement and strengthen partnership with Telkomcel.
“East Timor is an important market for the development and innovation of mobile networks because its users are very enthusiastic in adopting new technologies,” said Jerry.
Described further, Ericsson, as a long-term partner of Telkomcel has modernized the available infrastructure using Ericsson’s NFV infrastructure (NFVi) solution through software-defined infrastructure with HDS 8000 and Ericsson Radio System LTE RAN 17A software solution.
Ericsson vEPC and LTE RAN 17A software supports high-capacity environments and solutions that enable operators to develop new uses of the Internet of Things (IoT) for example.
