Jakarta, Gizmologi – Using the word ‘simple’ in describing the features of an electronic product like a gadget usually means that the product has limitations. The word is also fitting to describe this newest camera, the Canon EOS R100. The entry-class mirrorless whose features are relatively simple.
When a number of camera vendors started releasing special series for vlogging, as well as further integration with smartphones, the Canon EOS R100 actually appeared like a mirrorless camera released 5-6 years ago. The sensor used is exactly the same as the EOS M50 Mark II, first released 3 years ago. Provide expectations of what consumers can get.
The justification, of course, is the price. Canon EOS R100 is for people who want to switch from a smartphone camera to a mirrorless camera or upgrade their camera’s quality. Camera has bigger sensor than phone which means clearer images with custom lenses, despite less features.

The Canon EOS R100 screen is not yet touchscreen, can’t be rotated.
So the cheapest for the R series (Rebel), the price for the Canon EOS R100 is priced at USD 479.99, or around IDR 7 million. This price is only for the camera, aka body, only. Canon also sells it with the RF-S 18-45 mm IS STM kit lens, requiring buyers to increase their budget by almost IDR 2 million. Pretty affordable for a mirrorless camera, right?
So naturally when the features are simple. The 3-inch screen on the Canon EOS R100 behind uses an LCD type, does not support touch input, nor can it be opened or rotated. The buttons are simple, without joysticks or buttons that can be rotated.
Want to add a microphone? Unfortunately the Canon EOS R100 is not accompanied by a 3.5mm audio jack. The latest Canon camera does not have built-in image stabilization. Users need compatible lenses to stabilize their photos and videos. No streaming features, nor the ability to turn it into a webcam.
The strength of this camera is in the sensor it carries. Canon EOS R100 has a 24.1 Megapixel APS-C sensor which is better than other old school mirrorless cameras or flagship smartphone cameras. Not to mention when paired with a better lens.
Already Support Vertical Video Recording
Apart from favoring sensors from more expensive cameras, the Canon EOS R100 also supports dual pixel autofocus eye-tracking. With the Digic 8 processor, this camera can record video up to 4K resolution 24fps and 1080p 30fps. But with a note, the viewfinder will be slightly truncated in 4K mode, and the focus system “drops” to contrast-based.
For the younger generation and content creators, the Canon EOS R100 has a number of modern features. Call it the vertical video recording mode for today’s video platforms, as well as wireless data transfer via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Photos and videos can be saved to a UHS-I SD card, not the fastest, but it’s enough for a burst photo speed of only 3.5fps.
Canon EOS R100 is a good choice if you want to try a mirrorless lens with interchangeable lenses for different uses, despite the device’s limited features.According to Gizmo friends, is it better to buy an entry class camera, or is it enough with a smartphone?
