Meta’s New Feature to Counter Sextortion Threats
This new Meta feature is rolling out to make it harder for accounts that show signs of fraudulent behavior to ask to follow teens. This is detected by how new the account is, Meta will block the follow request completely, or send it to the teenager’s spam folder.
Sextortion perpetrators often claim to live in a certain location to trick teenagers into trusting them. To help prevent this, Meta is also testing a new safety notification in Instagram and Messenger’s DM features to inform teen users when they’re chatting with someone who may live in another country.
According to Meta, sextortion perpetrators often use the list of followers and people followed by their targets to try to blackmail victims by spreading their shame to other people. Therefore, Meta makes it so that accounts detected to be showing signs of fraudulent behavior will not be able to see other people’s followers or follower lists, so they cannot take advantage of this feature. Potential sextortionists also won’t be able to see a list of accounts that have liked someone’s posts, photos they’ve been tagged in, or other accounts that have tagged their photos.
To prevent this sextortion threat from happening further, Meta will soon no longer allow users to take screenshots or screen recordings of photos or videos sent in private messages. Fitur baru Meta ini akan terlihat pada fitur view once atau allow replay di DM Instagram dan Messenger. Meta also does not allow criminals to open photos or videos sent with both features on the web version of Instagram to prevent perpetrators from avoiding the ban on screenshots or screen recordings.
Meta’s next new feature is global Nude Content Protection in Instagram’s DM feature. This feature was finally launched after being tested in April 2024.
This new Meta feature will be automatically activated for teenagers under the age of 18. Cara kerja fitur ini akan memburamkan gambar yang terdeteksi mengandung ketelanjangan saat dikirim atau diterima melalui DM Instagram dan memperingatkan pengguna akan risiko terhadap pengiriman gambar-gambar sensitif.
Meta also worked with Larry Magid, President & CEO of ConnectSafely, to create an educational video for parents to understand how the feature works. The video is available on the Stop Sextortion page of the Meta Family Center website which you can click here.
Last week, Meta has removed more than 1.620 assets consisting of 800 Facebook Groups and 820 accounts affiliated with Yahoo Boys and attempting to organize, recruit, and train new perpetrators of sextortion. Last July, Meta also deleted around 7.200 Facebook assets involved in similar behavior.
Yahoo Boys has been banned under MetaTrader’s Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy. While taking aggressive steps to address violations from Yahoo Boys accounts, Meta said it is implementing new methods to identify and remove these accounts more quickly.
