Jakarta, Gizmologi โ The impact of the protests that have been ongoing since last weekend has been the disabling of one of TikTok's most widely used features, the TikTok Live feature. The inaccessibility has caused outrage among many, especially MSMEs, who have been significantly impacted by the inability to sell online as usual.
The good news is that starting this afternoon (September 2nd), TikTok's live feature is now accessible again. It took approximately three days for TikTok to finally decide when it was safe to reactivate the feature. It had previously stated that TikTok disabled the feature voluntarily, without government pressure.
A TikTok spokesperson said, "We have reinstated livestreaming in Indonesia so users can enjoy the full TikTok experience. Alongside this step, we will continue to implement additional security measures for the foreseeable future."

Still under evaluation, more businesses are starting to go live on TikTok.

The Gizmologi team can now access TikTok's live featureโwhen you press the "live" button in the top left corner of the screen, the live content appears immediately, eliminating the internet disruption notification. The option to stream TikTok live is also now accessible, indicating that it's fully back to normal for both live content viewers and those who want to host a video.
Furthermore, a TikTok spokesperson said, "We continue to monitor the situation and prioritize efforts to provide a safe and civilized platform for users to express themselves." TikTok's live feature has gradually become accessible since yesterday afternoon, with several Indonesian users starting to go live at 16:30 p.m.

What about MSMEs? When trying to access TikTok Shop, it was apparent that a number of brands and business owners had already begun utilizing live shopping as usual. On another occasion, the Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi), Nezar Patria, stated that his office continues to coordinate with TikTok regarding the TikTok live feature.
"We will try to build communication, and we understand that there will be an impact on MSMEs and community activities that use the live report feature. But don't forget that there are other features on TikTok that are still active. So, MSMEs can also use the features they have been using for sales," he explained at a meeting at the Indonesian Parliament Building on Tuesday (September 2nd), as quoted by Tirto.id.
Previously Disabled For Security Reasons
Furthermore, as of this afternoon, Nezar stated that the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kemkomdigi) was also unsure how long the TikTok live feature would be disabledโbefore it finally became fully accessible. "They are still evaluating based on the announcement they made. They are trying to monitor negative content that goes against their community guidelines," Nezar added.
Previously, TikTok's live feature was disabled on Saturday (August 20th) and temporarily suspended. At the time, a written statement from TikTok stated, "We are taking additional security measures to keep TikTok a safe and civil space. As part of this step, we are voluntarily suspending TikTok's live feature for the next few days in Indonesia."
