There are five main benefits of smart manufacturing technology presented directly by Hackathon participants in the top 10 round. Next, the three best teams will proceed to the Code Craft round, where they will further develop the technology that has been designed. The peak of the competition will be held on December 10, 2024, as well as the moment to announce the main winner of Ericsson Hackathon 2024.
Here are five key benefits of integrating 5G and Gen AI technologies in the manufacturing sector.
1. Speed, real-time monitoring, and early hazard detection
Data from the Ministry of Manpower shows that in the period from January to August 2024, Indonesia recorded 278.564 cases of work accidents, with the majority involving wage earners. To overcome this, smart manufacturing technology supported by 5G can be the main solution in improving work safety.
With higher data transfer speeds and lower latency, 5G technology allows data from sensors and devices in the field to be transmitted and processed instantly, providing real-time monitoring capabilities. In addition, the integration of this technology can detect hazards earlier and manage operational activities more safely, reducing the risk of accidents in the workplace. As a result, worker safety can be more assured, and a safe and efficient working environment can be created.
2. Longer machine life, smoother operation
In the production process, manual errors made by operators, especially in production calculations, can significantly reduce operational efficiency. Difficulties in remote collaboration to resolve technical issues, coupled with inaccurate data, often slow down decision-making and worsen machine conditions.
These challenges can be answered by 5G and AI technology. With the ability to provide early warning before the machine breaks down, maintenance can be carried out on time, thereby extending the life of the machine and maintaining smooth operations. This innovation not only increases efficiency but also optimizes productivity across the entire production line.
3. Drive operational efficiency and sustainability
With the support of 5G and Gen AI technology, supply chain management in smart manufacturing becomes more efficient and responsive. Real-time monitoring enables quick decision-making, reduces the risk of delays, and improves distribution accuracy. This technology also facilitates greater transparency throughout the supply chain process, allowing companies to more easily identify and address emerging issues.
In addition, smart manufacturing supports the circular economy by reducing waste and increasing resource efficiency through recycling and reuse of materials. With the integration of better maintenance predictions and more accurate quality inspections, companies can minimize waste and reduce product defects. This technology also helps track carbon footprints, ensure compliance with sustainability regulations, and support emissions reduction goals in the industry. Thus, smart manufacturing not only improves operational efficiency but also drives sustainability in the industry.
4. Large scale data management
Smart manufacturing technology enables companies to manage and leverage data at scale, opening up opportunities for previously unseen efficiencies and innovations. With 5G and AI-powered technologies, Gen AI powered by 5G capabilities can provide predictive insights to address industry challenges, such as machine maintenance and troubleshooting.
This technology also enables effective asset monitoring with a centralized management system, eliminating data silos and accelerating decision-making. In addition, technologies such as AR/VR provide interactive guidance in maintenance and training, while 3D models provide contextual views of operational data for better decisions. With the combination of 5G and AI, companies can increase productivity and reduce downtime in the production process.
5. Support for industrial downstreaming
Smart manufacturing technology plays a vital role in accelerating industrial downstreaming, which is a major focus of the Indonesian government. By increasing production efficiency, processing of raw materials into value-added products can be done more optimally. Smart manufacturing technology can support this downstreaming process by enabling remote operations, overcoming the challenges of remote mining locations with limited networks.
Smart manufacturing powered by 5G connectivity and Generative AI plays a critical role in processing mineral concentrates, supporting sustainable practices, and ultimately enabling the Indonesian mining industry to meet growing global demand.
