MEntering the moment of celebrating Christmas 2020 and New Year 2021 (NARU) which will still be carried out during the pandemic, Telkomsel held a number of activities for the community. Activities to secure and improve the quality of broadband networks, loyalty programs along with promotions for superior digital products, and sharing activities were presented.
Setyanto Hantoro, President Director of Telkomsel, realizes that the celebration of Christmas and New Year must still be carried out in a challenging pandemic atmosphere. Telkomsel strives to accompany all levels of society through real contributions that are expected to have a positive impact on society, especially loyal Telkomsel customers.
"As a connectivity enabler, we will consistently ensure that the end of year moment remains special for all people by continuing to be connected through the use of digital technology services supported by the latest and widest broadband network access from Telkomsel," said Setyanto during a virtual press conference held today in Jakarta (14/12).
Prediction of Increase in Communication Traffic
On Christmas 2020 and New Year 2021, Telkomsel predicts that data service traffic will increase by 10,19% compared to normal days in 2020. When compared to previous Christmas and New Year, Telkomsel predicts that data traffic will grow by 49,3%.
The prediction is based on the trend of changing customer behavior during the pandemic throughout this year. Where there is a shift in the use of digital-based service access for the needs of supporting daily activities.
Access to social media services is predicted to grow by 7,32%, communications services (such as instant messaging and video conference) will jump by 22,52%, video streaming services will increase by 12,47%, mobile gaming services will jump by 18,65%, browsing access will increase by 14,21%, and e-commerce service access will grow by around 13,17%.
Meanwhile, for SMS traffic, Telkomsel projects that there will be a growth of 4,89% compared to normal days in 2020. When compared to Christmas and New Year 2019, the growth is predicted to reach 0,8%. For Voice services, Telkomsel predicts that traffic will grow 2,76% from normal days this year. When compared to previous Christmas and New Year, Voice service traffic is expected to drop 12,1%.
Network Strengthening Efforts
Based on the traffic prediction above, Telkomsel took anticipatory steps by optimizing the network, especially broadband connectivity, at 550 points of interest (POI) spread throughout Indonesia. The POI includes 304 residential areas, 23 main hospital areas handling COVID-19, and 223 other main strategic points in each province (covering logistics distribution points such as airports, ports, roads, and other public facilities).
Hendri Mulya Syam, Telkomsel Network Director said that efforts to strengthen, add, and secure network access that have been carried out routinely are steps to meet customer needs. Especially related to broadband service access ahead of Christmas and New Year's moments.
"By focusing on network optimization at each priority point, we hope to be able to improve user experience when using the Telkomsel network. We ensure that strengthening and securing network access will reach all priority points so that all customers can continue to enjoy their digital services smoothly at the end of the year and the turn of the new year," said Hendri.
Conducting Network Test
As an effort to strengthen the quality and capacity of the network at the designated POI, Telkomsel operates an additional 587 new 4G LTE BTS, and 69 Compact Mobile BTS (COMBAT) units. They also increase the capacity of the internet gateway to 6.880 Gbps.
Until November this year, Telkomsel has also operated 4G LTE technology in all USO BTS spread across the 3T (underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost) regions. Including state borders to remote areas, while complementing more than 233.000 Telkomsel BTS that have been operating to serve more than 95% of the population in Indonesia.
Telkomsel also conducted a drive test or network test, following the health protocols in force in each region. The total distance traveled by the network test this time reached 14.008 km, covering 26 toll roads (including newly operating ones) in the regions of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.
Telkomsel uses six parameters in assessing network quality, namely Coverage, Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR), Call Completion Success Rate (CCSR), Call Setup Time (CST), Mean Opinion Score (MOS), and Data Throughput. Based on these parameters, the drive test conducted gave good results, with data acquisition of 100% Coverage; CSSR 98,73%; CCSR 99,26%; CST 6,61 seconds; MOS ≥ 3 90,99%; and an average Data Throughput reaching 12,92 Mbps.
Hendri further explained that Telkomsel also continues to strengthen the roadmap for 5G implementation in Indonesia by expanding the coverage of the VoLTE network. Telkomsel's VoLTE service can now be enjoyed by customers in 48 districts/cities spread across the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.
The presence of Telkomsel VoLTE with wider coverage and supported by synergy with smartphone providers that support VoLTE services allows more customers to get a better and clearer calling experience thanks to Telkomsel's leading and widest 4G LTE network. Customers can also freely surf, open various applications, stream videos, and play games while still on a VoLTE call.
