Jakarta Air Quality is Getting Worse and Threatening to Citizens Health


Jakarta predicted will be haunted by unhealthy air in the next couple of days. Because of that Jakarta sitting in the first position of the worst air quality in the world.

According to Airvisual.com, Monday, July 1st, 2019, Jakarta is sitting in the first position with Air Quality Index (AQI) 161. AQI rated from 0 to 500, the lower the AQI the better the air quality, the bigger it is the worse it became.

The second position was a taken by Emirates with AQI numbered 153. And the third taken b New Delhi, India with AQI numbered 141. The AQI of these three countries is classified as unhealthy.

The research from the Univesity of Chicago showed that the air quality in Jakarta is so bad that it is cutting 2.3 years worth of the average citizen lifespan.“High air pollution is undermining Indonesians’ health,” researchers from the university’s Energy Policy Centre told Phys.Org.

This air quality is regarded as unhealthy because it can damage the health and caused a swelling of the heart and lungs. And for people who have asthma and other respiratory diseases will have it worst.

Airvisual.com, who monitor air quality around the world, recommended to the people who lived in these cities to not to do any outdoor activities. They also recommend wearing a mask and turning on the air purifier.

The bad air quality in Jakarta predicted will last until this Friday, 5 July 2019. At Saturday, 6 July 2019 Jakarta air quality is predicted to get better, but still, have a bad side to health.

“The source of the bad air quality is drought, vehicles also take a part in it,” said Dodo Gunawan, the Head of the BMKG Climate Change Information Center in his presentation at the Graha National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Matraman, East Jakarta, Friday, June 28, 2019.

Dodo also said that the construction in Jakarta also takes part in making the air quality worse. dust and smoke from the construction are the issues. BMKG is trying to monitor the air quality, the monitoring focus on inversion. Inversion according to hydrometeorology is trapped air and cannot raise to height.

So wearing a mask when going to do some activities outside is a must.
